About Dekema State

Take a step back into the past  and meet the Frisian landed gentry as they used to live a hundred years ago. The centuries-old  moated manorhouse and its 6 hectares ( 15 acres) of surrounding grounds are well worth a visit.

Dekema State is a small estate in the characteristic “terp”(=mound) village of Jelsum, a few kilometres just outside of Leeuwarden.

Enter the grounds and  step back into history.

Stinzen flora (rare springflowering bulbs only to be found in historic gardens), espaliered fruit trees, orchard, kitchen garden, surrounding moat with monumental drawbridge and tree-lined walkways around pasture and woodland transport you to the spirit of the past.

The historically furnished interiors of the rooms in the manorhouse complete the picture. The house contains a portrait gallery, antique furniture and precious heirlooms passed  down from earlier generations.

The visitor to Dekemastate  will be issued with a guidebook in English that gives a description and information of each room. With this in hand he or she can make an individual  round tour of the building and its surrounding gardens.

During opening hours simple refreshments are served on the terrace and veranda outside the entrance building. You can also book a picnic (please book min.  2 days in advance). We do not serve meals.

Children can dress up in historical costumes, go on a treasure-hunt or play with historical toys. (not during activities, unless otherwise stated)

Why not visit us during one of our activities like “The Museum-weekend”, The Spring Fair”, “The “Day of the Castle”,  “Bee-keeping” Day” or “Conker”(chestnut ) Day “? During these activities there is lots to see and do.

A piece of advice: Do check on our website before setting off.

Dekema State may be closed because it can be a bespoke venue for events like weddings, corporate events or private functions like familiy celebrations  with afternoon teas, lunches or dinners

It is possible for groups to book visits outside opening hours. Groups that have booked in advance will be shown round by experienced volunteer guides, provided any English-speaking guides are available on that particular date.
